Interior scenes were shot in Montreal. The site’s consensus states: “A talented cast is wasted on a bland attempt at a suspenseful, serial killer flick.

Eric S. Arnold of Newsweek gives a mainly positive review, stating that ” The Bone Collector may be formulaic—but many good recipes are. He praised the performances by lead and supporting actors, but deplored plot’s “utter absurdity”, writing: “The movie is a peculiar experience to sit through, because the quality of the acting is so much better than the material deserves. VJ Boyd and Mark Bianculli would write the series and also serve as executive producer, and Seth Gordon would direct the potential pilot.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. North American theatrical release poster. Universal Pictures Columbia Pictures. Release date. November 5, Running time. This hero is severely disabled – he can move only his head and one finger.

To compensate, he is an ex-cop and a respected expert in forensics so he has numerous old cop buddies who keep calling him for opinions and instructions. He faces a villain here who is just plain nuts, who lives in the past and works his evil in historic ways on victims who he believes are also in the past.

This leads our hero to the books – history books, that is. Jeffry Deaver is one of the best thriller writers there is. The Bone Collector, the first of the Lincoln Rhyme novels is certainly no exception. Although Lincoln Rhyme, formerly head of the Investigation and Resource Division of the New York City Police Department, is now a quadriplegic and can only move his head and done finger, there is no lack of action and tension in this gripping story.

When the department asks for his help again with a case, Rhyme reluctantly agrees to help them try to solve it. He appears to know almost everything about everything, and to be able to decipher clues from the most microscopic evidence. With the help of patrolwoman Amelia Sachs, his personal aide Thom, a crime-scene tech, and the two detectives who lured him into working on the case to begin with, Rhyme unravels all the clues through the most unexpected twists.

He must overcome obstacles raised by the political establishment, the FBI, and even his own reluctance, as well as the traps set by the perpetrator to finally solve the case. This is my first novel by this author. I saw the movie based on this book not realizing at the time that it was based on a novel.

I prefer to read the novels first as so much tends to be edited out. The story sort of plods along but I kept plowing to get to the antagonists’ reasoning. Knew it would be different from movie but still personal and sick. I hurt for the victims even though I knew they would die. And I couldn’t reconcile the books cover of Rhyme and Sachs with the descriptions in the books or with the two wonderful screen actors. Handsome and beautiful just didn’t mesh w the cover image.

But the police procedure.. One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. He is seriously wondering whether his life is now worth living. A killer stalks the streets of New York City. He is kidnapping his victims and planning horrific deaths for them. He compounds his intentions by leaving the police clues at each scene of his next intended murder.

It is a constant race against time and the police appear to be losing. The authorities turn to Rhyme but is he in a fit state to cope with demands of a serial killer investigation. In addition to the search for the killer there are several sub-plots continuing throughout the story. The on-going United Nations conference that New York is currently hosting.

Deaver writes well in my view and in addition to his description of the physical limitations a quadriplegic such as Rhyme experiences he also shows a good insight into the emotional and mental health aspects of such a condition. Deaver does not spare his readers the realities of such an existence.

Well worth a look. A good procedural crime thriller with the emphasis on procedural – too many references to somewhat arcane SCO work without enough explanation dilute the tension being built up in the serial killer parts – but it is the first in a series so things may improve The film is a help, though Rhymes is far more likeable through being played by Denzel A good start – I hope! Even though I’d seen the film which seems to have followed the book very closely, I enjoyed this more than I expected, and, though I thought I’d remembered the ending, I hadn’t!

In parts there is a little too much forensic detail and technical information but I coped by glancing over it to get back to the story. It’s a different take on the usual detective novel and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, who were well drawn. The fact that Rhyme is crippled and can only move his head and one finger, and needs everything doing for him, down to the most basic bodily functions, is dealt with in a matter-of-fact, non-pitying way, and does not become ‘ the story’, a quadriplegic is what he is, not who he is and it is simply part of the tapestry of the story.

Great read. Good intro to the series. Starts off with some quite technical terms to get you into the lingo and, to be honest, it just went staight over my head , but once the story beds in it becomes a good read. The characters are competant, clever and well thought out. The plot is easy to follow but also interesting. The subplots weave well into the main plot. The pacing is strong. I give it 4 stars because i’ve already read book 2 in the series and that is even better! Audio Software icon An illustration of a 3.

Title: The Bone Collector Quadripeligic ex-cop Lincoln Rhyme was looking forward to his assisted suicide when he got the news: some sicko was abducting people in a taxi and leaving them to die in particularly sadistic ways. With time counting down between each abduction and possible death, Rhyme recruits rather-unwilling Amelia Donaghy, haunted by her cop father’s suicide and thinking she’s next, into working the crime scenes to track down the killer.

An extremely overlooked film in my opinion. Yes, Se7en and Silence of the Lambs absolutely annihilate this, but for a 90’s detective case it’s rather compelling. This is what happens when you cast two great leads, a decent film is produced. Much like any other serial killer story, our main characters must find out who the homicidal maniac is before they kill again. The difference is, the forensic expert is paralysed and so he trains an unwilling rookie to solve the case.

Murder case aside, it’s all about passing on knowledge and skills to another peer in order to complete a task. Rhyme is unable to do anything, so he envisages his own image within Amelia. Turning her from a rookie cop to the perfect forensic investigator. Highlighting the importance of communication and trust. Fortunately Washington and Jolie have decent on screen chemistry.

Both their talents put together to create an explosion of raw acting. Jolie plays a tough yet vulnerable officer, Washington juxtaposes this with an experienced performance.

The two amalgamate to create the perfect crime solving entity. The crime scenes themselves were visceral and not easy watches, particularly being scolded to death by oncoming steam. I loved the gritty realism that is sustained throughout. It evokes a sense of mystery, we are attempting to solve the case with the characters.

Supporting cast were good, nothing outstanding. Although I wanted more Queen Latifah! The killer’s reveal was a letdown unfortunately. The final twenty minutes were rushed to what was an intelligently paced thriller. And thank God we don’t have those horrible slow motion frames that were all so apparent in the 90s The Bone Collector is a damn good watch, and for any Washington or Jolie fans you are in for a great time.
