The game is mostly made up of conversations, taking place with friends around town or in IM conversations, but those conversations aren’t structured around currying favour or attaining a goal. Instead, they’re written with a light touch and a lot of humour.

There’s a haziness to it that makes it easy to fall in love with the characters and their warmth towards one another after spending just 15 minutes with them. One of the most complex and initially intimidating games in existence, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is also one of the best, should you be able and willing to navigate the learning curve. It’s the post-apocalyptic survival simulator that games like DayZ aspire to be, packed with the unexpected and terrifyingly complex.

You can repair a car and mow through crowds of zombies but you’ll also need to keep an eye on your supplies of food and drink. Cataclysm is a full-featured life simulator that just so happens to take place when there’s little life left in the world. Desktop Dungeons is very, very clever. Desktop Dungeons is also very, very simple at first glance.

A roguelike in which every level is a puzzle, and where survival is dependent on working out the correct order in which to approach its enemies. It’s only when you play through level after level, death after death, that you begin to see the extreme precision of its design underneath the surface.

Your hero’s health and mana are not simply meters to be emptied and filled, but resources from which every expenditure is an important choice. Make those choices unwisely and you’ll end up running out of either one, with no way to recharge and enemies left on the board to defeat.

What I admire most about Desktop Dungeons is that no death is ever unexpected. The game will tell you that the decision you’re about to make is going to kill you, and you will therefore only choose that death if there are no other options. Sometimes, though, there are ingenious methods by which to escape said death and figuring those out feels great.

Doki Doki Literature Club follows the template of a thousand other visual novels : you’re a non-descript teenaged boy in a Japanese high school who decides to join a new after-school club. There in the literature club of the title, you meet four cute anime girls, and the very occasional choices you make amid reams of dialogue and description determine which of those girls grow to like you.

It’s sweet, and well-written as far as these things go, but in the back of your head should linger the words that appear when you first run the game: “This game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed. The answer is smart and brilliant, but to say anything else would spoil the fun.

If you need more convincing that it’s worth your time and don’t mind spoilers for the entire game, then read our analysis of exactly what’s so clever about it. It was the only one of its kind. Distant biplanes are flying against the blue sky. The architecture is unusually yellow. Latin music is playing. There’s a card in your hand which, with simple instructions, gives you your mission. It seeds a feeling of adventure and mischief in mere seconds. Everything that follows keeps up the wit and lightness of spirit.

Gravity Bone is a story of espionage, assassination, double-crosses, thrilling chases, and it makes use of quick cuts and techniques borrowed from film in a way that’s still fresh now. Best of all, it’s funny. There’s no dialogue, but chasing a thief down the length of a long dining table while glasses explode underfoot is a physical and visual set piece designed to make you chuckle.

Released in , Samorost is a point-and-click adventure game that forgoes many of the normal trappings of the genre. Instead, dive into the Steam Community forms, read some guides, talk to some players, and then rope in a few friends to help you get hooked on the original MOBA, and one of the biggest PC games in history – you’ll quickly see why it’s a perennial pick for our list of the best free games.

CCP Games’ immersive, and utterly humongous, space MMO has been free-to-play for a while now, thanks to its “alpha clones” system. It’s akin to an unlimited free trial featured in the likes of World of Warcraft, which basically gives you access to all the mining, piracy, manufacturing, trading, exploring and combat, but keeps certain skills off-limits unless you pay a monthly fee.

But with a ton of content very much still accessible in front of the paywall, it’s an absolute joy and a bargain to boot. Dwarf Fortress is one-hundred percent free, it doesn’t have microtransactions of any kind unless you count donations to the two-person dev team.

But it does have surprise invasions by werebeasts and hidden aquifers that are just waiting to flood your entire fortress with a single misplaced pickaxe. It will take you a while to get used to Dwarf Fortress because there really isn’t anything else like it, though some of the newbie-friendly starter packs can help ease the transition. Once you get comfortable with telling your dwarves how to build out their probably temporary shelter from the cold, hard world above, you won’t want to stop.

Even when the werebeasts show up. Some game mash-ups just make too much sense, and putting the gameplay of Bomberman together with the trappings of the battle royale genre created an instant pick for our list of the best free games.

That is Bombergrounds in a nutshell: you and 24 other players all appear on a gridded battlefield and compete to be the last one standing by dropping bombs, grabbing powerups, and smacking each other around.

If you grew up playing collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon, then Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is all the fun without the bookshelves full of card binders. Hearthstone takes a familiar mana mechanic, used for everything from summoning creatures to casting spells, then simplifies it by granting each player an additional unit each turn.

This makes jumping into Hearthstone that much easier, as you can now focus on the core strategies of your deck without worrying about taking up precious deck space with land. It’s one of those “one more game turns into an all-nighter” deals, for sure. Few action RPGs ever transcend the status of “well, this is good to play if you’re tired of Diablo,” but Path of Exile is one of them. Naturally, it’s great to play with friends too – and much easier to convince them to join you with no upfront cost!

But there are other players too, and it’s a bit like bumper cars; if you hit them, you bounce back. It’s tough to stay alive, but lots of fun! Each game lasts less than a minute, but you’ll want to keep playing again and again.

A unique blend of action, exploration, and meat grinder enemy encounters, developer Digital Extremes has constantly evolved the world of Warframe while adding content that fans have asked for, creating a lean and meaningful experience in the process.

It has starships and glorious gear to equip, chunky weapons, and lethal blades to collect while interacting with a dedicated community of fans. The game that arguably kickstarted the esports craze, StarCraft II maintains a thriving competitive scene more than a decade on from its original release.

Following on from the events of ‘s Brood War expansion of the original game, the sequel continues Blizzard’s epic space opera, featuring the return of its three iconic factions. A classic narrative mixes with oceans-deep tactical gameplay to make one of the best examples of this iconic genre. The free version offers access to the entire Wings of Liberty single-player campaign, as well as the multiplayer modes, although the Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void expansions are paid additions to the story.

The open-ended gameplay tasks players with establishing and running a colony of dwarves within an auto-generated world with its own unique history. The original text-based graphics can be hard to parse although modded alternatives are available and the punishing nature of the world can be a turn-off, but persevere and you’ll be met with a hugely-immersive experience with a level of detail hard to match in any game that you don’t play with a D Not quite Overwatch, not quite Counter-Strike, Valorant is an intriguing blend of the tactical and hero shooter genres that manages to capture the best of both.

A diverse and growing roster of characters head into best-of round-based contest; one team tries to plant and defend the explosive ‘spike’, while the other attempts to stop them, before the roles are reversed at half time. Characters are split into multiple classes based on their combat abilities, but everyone has access to the same guns, meaning that you’ll need to master both the crisp gunplay as well as the map-changing abilities to succeed.

One of the biggest breakout hits of , a reasonable elevator pitch for Genshin Impact might describe it as ‘anime Breath of the Wild’, but that’s far from the entire picture. Its four-player combat lets you switch between characters on the fly, using their elemental magic to pull off crazy combos. During downtime, you can explore the massive open world of Teyvat, climbing, gliding, and swimming to unlock its many secrets. The Gacha-style approach to microtransactions won’t be popular with everyone, but it doesn’t stop Genshin from being one of the most ambitious free-to-play titles on this list.

Halo’s premium Xbox heritage might once have made Halo a strange choice for a free PC game, but with the release of Infinite, the game is changing.

While the campaign will be a paid experience, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is entirely free, offering a crisp experience that’s a little more arcade-style than something like Counter-Strike or Destiny, but certainly one of the best free FPS games out there right now. Diablo 4 is still a long way off, but Path of Exile is likely to remain a significant contender to the dungeon-crawling throne even once it’s time to return to Sanctuary.

Path of Exile’s huge skill tree and regular expansions have turned it into one of the most-played games on Steam, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
