Since it hit bookshelves in , Frank Herbert’s novel Dune has served as source material for several movie adaptations and even inspired George Lucas and Star Wars. The popular novel has also been adapted into several video games over the years. Although fan-made games and mods are common, there are only five officially-licensed Dune video games to release so far.

Although a new Dune video game is in development, so far only five official releases have occurred between and The first video game adaptation, appropriately titled Dune , was an adventure strategy game that was only loosely based on Frank Herbert’s novel.

Although not officially tied to David Lynch’s film, this first video game adaptation of Dune had more in common with the movie than the book. Dune was still a hot property in the ’70s and ’80s, with Dune board game s and other licensed merchandise hitting store shelves. However, its popularity had waned going into the ’90s, but that didn’t stop more Dune video games from releasing.

It’s widely considered to be the first modern real-time strategy game, which means it has major historical significance within the RTS genre. Despite Dune II ‘s importance and good reception, it never got a true sequel. Instead, Westwood Studios and Virgin Interactive opted to remake their game in and call it Dune The game also had improved graphics and new live-action cutscenes. A PS2 port of Dune released the following year, but it didn’t quite reach the heights of the original game it was based on.

This was likely because there was no new Dune movie or television adaptation in the works at the time, so interest had waned. However, Dune was successful enough to spawn its own sequel, Emperor: Battle for Dune. It wasn’t as well-received as its predecessors, so Battle for Dune essentially served as a swan song to the RTS Dune games.

It was a 3D action-adventure game, not real-time strategy like the others, and it was based around the Sci Fi channel’s miniseries of the same name. However, Frank Herbert’s Dune was neither a critical nor a commercial success. The game’s failure ultimately led to developer Cryo Interactive going bankrupt, and it effectively cancelled the sequel, Dune Generations.

After all this time, and all these games, the best of the bunch is still Dune II. It helped create the entire RTS genre, and it remains a beloved real-time strategy game. There’s a reason it was remade in , and why it sold well for its time. Although, the new Dune game currently in development from Funcom could dethrone it. Only time will tell if a Dune video game will ever be as beloved as the book it’s based on.

The spices are the most precious things of the universe and a person can take command over the entire universe if he controls the spice.

Also, spice allows people to travel from one place to another in the universe. The people of the planet are known as Fremen and are distributed amongst several tribes. At the beginning of the game, the player needs to associate himself with people of the tribe so that he can establish cordial relationships with them in order to get help from them whenever needed. But every time, it is not easy to convince the tribes to shake hands with the player.
