The Pen tool is one of the most tried and true ways to remove backgrounds from images in Photoshop. It gives you the most control over the outcome. However, because it gives you the most control, it can also be the most time-consuming. The Pen tool requires patience. If you need to make a curved line, click-hold-drag to produce a curved line, moving the mouse to adjust the curve as needed.

Using a combination of the Pen tool and other methods here will help you get closer to your desired result. For more detailed info on the Pen tool, have a look at this Adobe tutorial. Photo credit: Kim Carpenter on Unsplash.

Best to use when: the subject is mostly high contrasted from the background and with complex edges, and where you want to save time and have Photoshop detect the path for you.

If you feel you need to make adjustments to the selection, you can backtrack a couple of steps and redo them to get better results, or use a combination of other techniques listed in this article to get you closer to your desired result.

For more detailed info about how the Magnetic Lasso tool works, check out this Adobe tutorial. Photo credit: Dlanor S on Unsplash. It also can be used on a much wider range of possible photos than other methods listed here, because it works by detecting color changes to determine where the selection should be. With your image open in Photoshop, right-click your Background layer and click Duplicate Layer. Click the eye icon to the left of the original layer to turn that layer off.

Select the Quick Selection tool from the toolbox on the left may be hidden under the Object Selection tool. Using the tool, start painting your subject. To adjust your tool size, use the [ or ] keys to decrease or increase the size.

No tricky manual selections are required! First, make sure your image layer is selected in your Layers Panel and unlocked. Now go up to your properties panel.

Scrolling to the bottom of your properties panel, look for the Quick Actions options. The Remove Background button will create a selection around your subject, then apply that selection to a layer mask.

The result is a cut out image with a transparent background in a single click! On the other hand, the Select Subject button creates an automatic selection around your subject without applying it to a mask. This way, you can quickly refine the selection in case something gets messed up in the process.

Photoshop will work its magic and automatically create a selection around your subject and remove the white background. In some cases, you may find that Photoshop made a mistake and removed part of your image that you wanted to keep. This can be easily adjusted at any time with your layer mask. Then access your brush tool B and set white to your foreground color to add back part of your image.

If you want to remove additional areas from the photo, set the foreground color to black instead. Now paint over your image to quickly refine your layer mask and add back any important bits that Photoshop might have accidentally removed.

How easy was that? To remove a white background using the Magic Wand Tool, select the tool W and click on your image layer. Now click the white background to select it and press Delete to make it transparent. The Magic Wand Tool is fantastic at making selections based on similar colors in your images.

The only trouble is that it requires some specific settings to work just right. I outline everything you need to know for using the Magic Wand Tool to remove a white background in the steps below. To access the Magic Wand Tool, simply press W on your keyboard or find it in your toolbar. If you do not see it, it may be hidden under other tools such as the quick selection or object selection tools.

By clicking and holding on the tool icon, your other tool options will appear. Select the Magic Wand Tool. However, if you have a white background taken in a studio with different shades of white, a 5 by 5 average will provide a better selection.

Next, set the tolerance to This is an excellent in-between value that allows some wiggle room from the original sampled color, which will be white in this case.

If you have more shades of white in your background, it may be worthwhile to bump this to 50 or 60 instead. In the final setting option, make sure Anti-alias is checked off, while the two remaining options are left unchecked. With all your settings in order, click on your white background to create a selection. Photoshop will sample the colors around where you clicked and find similar colors in your image to add to the selection.

Since white is a pretty easy color to select, Photoshop does a great job creating an accurate selection. Now your selection will be added to your mask, and the background will be removed entirely. The beauty of layer masks is that you can go back and edit them later on if you need! After following these steps, you have successfully removed your white background and make it transparent. If you select “Smart Radius”, then Photoshop will automatically determine what the pixel radius is.

Smooth is the main refinement you will need for photo editing. This will smooth out the jagged edges of the selection. You may also want to increase the feather, which will create a soft edge around the selection.

The quick selection tool allows you to easily add or remove from current selection. For this tool and any brush tool you can use the bracket key to increase and decrease the size of the brush.

The refine edge brush tool will adjust the border area and is useful to add hair or other fine details to the selection. The brush tool is used to fine-tune selections and the lasso tool is used to draw a free-hand selection. On the “Select and Mask” window, hit OK. Your foreground is now selected. To finish removing the background, hit the layer mask button to apply your selection to the mask.

When you create a layer mask, the background is still available behind the mask in case you ever need it again. I’m a teacher and developer with freeCodeCamp. I run the freeCodeCamp. If you read this far, tweet to the author to show them you care.
